U.S. Jury Cites Unpaid Work at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart was found guilty of forcing its employees to work unpaid overtime in the first of 40 such lawsuits to go to trial. By Steven Greenhouse. I think this is a fairly common practice in retail, and it's good to see Wal-mart's employees stand up for themselves. Best Buy did this when I worked for them. They'd give me more work than they had budgeted for and then tell me that they won't pay for me to go overbudget. When you schedule people for hours that you're in business, the only thing you can expect to get done is to help customers. So you have to show up on your own time, in plainclothes, in order to get your work done. Eventually I threatened to report their actions and got transferred to a different department. PC Mag: Gateway Ad, FileMaker review I understand why this happens; it's because the picture is taken by a stock photo company or ad agency, and they typically use Macs. But it's a funny snafu nonetheless. [The Macintosh News Network]

A historical quote that got significantly less mainstream press than Trent Lott's remark:

"The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way [a Washington organization that opposes right-wing extremism] -- all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say: 'You helped this happen.' "

AP: "Trent Lott will step down as Senate Republican leader." This is proof that our nation's leaders are allowed to have bigoted, puritanistic and racist viewpoints, and use them to color their legislation. But voice those viewpoints and you're out of a job. Well... sometimes, anyway. [Scripting News]

Sorry about the lack of news on the NewtSync front... I've been staying away from it for a couple of days in order to have extra mental energy for an Apple project. It's something new and cool and I get to code the entire thing all by my little-ol-lonesome self... but of course I can't say what it is :-)

Anyway, the weekend is approaching and I should have more time/energy to work on outside ventures such as NewtSync.

Invisible actors guessing game.

FilmWise hosts competitions where readers attempt to name the actors and films associated with stills where all human flesh has been peeled away with the magic photoshop flensing blade.
