Creative Commons

Last month I had an enjoyable telephone conversation with Adrian Bye who works at Creative Commons. Creative Commons was started by Lawrence Lessig and others to "promote the innovative reuse of all sorts of intellectual works."

Adrian had seen some of my postings on Slashdot and urged be to license my free web books under a Create Commons license.

I finally got around to signing a memorandum of understanding with Creative Commons today, and made a first pass at updating my web site.

Two things to talk about today: I finalized my strategy for writing my web information appliance application and I have added new material to my new web book The Software Design Book.

For my new application, I am using VisualWorks Smalltalk and a model-view-controller (MVC) pattern for the application. This allows me to start by developing the "business logic" model code that also includes access to other web services, Internet access, etc. When I am done with the model I will then write two view-controller pairs: one for a web based application and one for a standalone application for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Anyway, good plans :-)

I have also been working on my new web book this morning. I only have about 10 pages written - I am tempted to generate a PDF file and post it as-is for helpful comments and suggestions, but I will probably be patient - make it longer before I ask people for feedback.
