Patent granted for Ethical AI I saw this earlier on Slashdot - I was going to ignore ths article, but the very subject does push a few of my buttons. For starters, granting patents for business processes, software, etc. just seems like a bad idea. Has to be a better way to protect valid intelectual property. I looked over the new website for the patent and was disappointed but not surprised to see that (apparently) the procedure for creating such an AI was not spelled out so clearly that I felt that I had to fire up LispWorks and start coding :-) 3:35:40 PM

Great Newsweek Editorial Eleanor Clift just wrote an interesting editorial that just showed up on the MSNBC Newsweek web site. She digs into the psychological reasons why President Bush will probably have political problems because of Iraq. I think that her tone is a little negative (I like President Bush personally - I think that problems with his administration largely are the fault of his political handlers), but still a very interesting read and she makes some great points. 3:25:21 PM

Near record U.S. trade deficit How do we get people to conserve on the use of imported oil? Any chance of President Bush making a strong appeal to the American public to conserve fuel and possibly save our economy from disaster? I doubt it - even if he wanted to, his political handlers would not let him alienate his largest political backers (energy industry). This is a serious situation that few polititions want to touch (most take lots of money from the energy industries, both Democrats and Republicans). 8:40:18 AM
