This is relatively old news (I'm going back through a queue of old notes.), but I thought it was worth posting, nevertheless. Jamie Zawinski (XEmacs, Netscape, etc.) relatively recently posted a rant based on his experience installing and using a number of Linux video software packages. He certainly makes great observations about usability, but best of all, it introduces readers to this turn of phrase:
What are these fucktards thinking???
And if that wasn't enough, the comments continue in the theme with this language:
Makali wrote:Whenever a programmer thinks, "Hey, skins, what a cool idea", their computer's speakers should create some sort of cock-shaped soundwave and plunge it repeatedly through their skulls.
"Fucktards" and "audio-cock technology". Two terms I think everyone should start working into everyday conversation. |
SJ Mercury: Disk-drive capacity continues to grow. Dan Gillmor. The kinds of files we store keep getting bulkier, but the disk-drive wizards are moving fast enough to stay ahead. In the next few years, given their continuing innovation, they're likely to do something I didn't imagine possible until recently -- give us so much storage at such a low cost that we genuinely don't know how to use it all. [Tomalak's Realm]
I'm pretty certain we'll find a use for it. Dan Gillmor recounts some of the ways we have in the past and might in the future. One use that I heard suggested recently is basically a variant of the Gordon Bell device that Dan mentions at the end of his article. It would be a home video system that recorded everything going on. It might sound excessive, but as an obsessive new father, I hate missing moments like first crawling, first standing, etc. If I had a rolling video stream that I could go back and grab from, I think that would be cool. Of course, you probably need lots of cameras to ensure good angles, which just means more storage.
And with older children, this setup should also eliminate questions about who did what. Instant replay for parents. |
PerversionTracker—a site which makes fun of “apparently useless software” for Macs—has quickly become one of my favorite reads. So damn funny. [inessential.com]
Harsh, funny stuff. Made me laugh. Almost makes you want to try some of the software to see if it is really that bad. I just hope nothing of mine ends up there. Reminds me that I never put a decent icon on my FedEx plug-in for Sherlock. Glad I never submitted to VersionTracker. |

It doesn't really matter to me, right now, as my TiBook has its antenna built in. However, it used to really annoy me with my old IBM laptop, and it might matter again, if I ever want to add an 11g PC Card to my TiBook. (The built-in connector in the TiBook cannot support AirPort Extreme.) |
