Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Reagan

Looking back at the Reagan Presidency the one thing that stands out is how I felt about the world. Reagan brought hope, patriotism and clarity. He was our president.

He wasn't perfect but I got the feeling that he loved the country and he loved to serve. He didn't live and die by polls. He knew what he wanted. I have many great memories of the man.

My favorite memory, the one that stands out, was at the rededication of the Statue of Liberty. I watched on my television. Fireworks filled the sky above New York Harbor. Reagan stood at attention, looking on. I was proud to be an American. Patriotism didn't seem goofy.

In the years since Reagan left office I've spent time on the freedom trail, at Gettysburg, Sharpsburg, Bull Run, Washington, DC. I've thought about our founding fathers and wondered what courage compelled them to risk their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. And I've watched politicians that in no way could be trusted to risk anything.

I believe Reagan was a man in the mold of Adams, Washington, Jefferson and other great patriots. The only difference is that instead of living in history he lives in my memory. And for that I'm grateful...........
