Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Escalante

I like to get out into the field. I enjoy going back to my roots. Nothing is closer to those roots, in terms of my professional life, than pulling cable. That's why I jump on the opportunity to spend a couple of days as part of a cabling effort.

Last summer I worked with the Garfield School District and SEDC to re-cable Tropic Elementary. It was great fun. I insisted that they invite me back to help again. So for the last few months I've been looking forward to today. The wiring project for Garfield District this summer was Escalante Elementary School in the heart of downtown Escalante, Utah.

How remote is Escalante? Four years ago marked my first and, until today, last trip to this area. At that time the Principal, Ron Hitchcock, told me that Escalante was the most remote place in the Continental US, according to Outside Magazine. I don't know if that's true, but it makes for a fun story.

My experience today is what makes life at UEN so enjoyable. Out of the office, working with our customers, building friendships and doing something that matters. It makes a difference in the lives of those we serve. It makes for a fun day. And, hey, you can't beat the scenery...........
