Pulling Cable

From 1978 through 1988 I worked pulling cable and installing phone systems. It was the best 10 years of my working life. I had no boss, no salary, no co-workers and very few worries. Every day I pulled cable, installed equipment and, once a week or so, finished a system. I rarely worked more than 6 hours a day and when I did the money made up for the inconvenience of crowding into my dinner hour. What a life! I miss those days.

So when I get a chance to use those cable pulling skills I jump at the opportunity. Today I spent several hours at Delta High School working with my friends from SEDC and Millard district. We pulled cable. Lot's of it. We were up and down ladders, working in ceilings with lift-up tile, using razor knives, electrical tape and pull string. We snaked cable ends through holes in concrete walls and gathered dozens of runs at a intermediate distribution frame (IDF). I even took time out at lunch to visit the local hardware store and purchase a couple of new tools. These were definitely needed for the job. Yes!

By the end of the day I was tired and sweaty. My hands were dirty, as were my clothes. We could see a lot of progress and it felt good. I can't bring back the good old days. My job is filled with endless meetings, budget reviews, phone calls, office work. Sometimes it's fun just to get out of the office and do some physical work. Today was a blast.........
