US Broadband
I continue to be concerned about the lack of affordable bandwidth for the average network consumer. This analysis of a recent FCC report further increases my worries and points to a flawed model of network delivery. The three numbers that jumped out at me from the report:
16 The US ranks 16th worldwide in broadband usage per capita and 16th in broadband growth.
200 The FCC definition of broadband is 200 Kbps. Uninspiring, to say the least. How about 5 Mbps as a minimum? Oh, too much. Then at least set the floor at 1.5 Mbps.
98 "Cable and DSL providers control almost 98 percent of the residential and small-business broadband market." The definition of a "Concentrated" market is when four or fewer companies control at least 80% of a market. This must be super-concentrated. It can't be good for consumers.
