Perhaps it's a function of my age (I'm not THAT old), but by the time I came on the scene the internet was already up and running. I did not have to be one of the system administrators with a unix box and apache hooking things up for the first time. My impression of those early days was that setting up a web site (likely just a dialup bbs or html1.0) meant setting up a computer and configuring DNS yourself. Not sure/would probably need someone else's story to confirm. So without that background I am now for the first time attempting to figure out DNS. It's one of those things that reading about doesn't help, because I've read about it and it hasn't helped. Essentially there is another level of redirection that happens in the practical world, involving the role of domain name resellers. It led me astray for a while because it lets you change something called a
"nameserver" which does not immediately indicate anything you want to do. I mean, what you really want to do is have your domain point somewhere, right? What's all this nameserver business?

Fortunately I chose a hosting provider that is handholding me a bit. I'm not pleased that I had to open a ticket right away on sign-up, and not pleased that the ftp upload address has changed, but pleased anyway that they're on top of it and hopefully glorious hours of coding will be forthcoming.

Subject: Domain Registration

I originally purchased my domain from another reseller (discountASP.net). They purchase their domains from opensrs.com, which I mentioned in the form with your company. Opensrs.com has a "manage domain" page which I changed to the hosting matters nameserver. Here is what I am trying to do:
1) Make it so that egrigg9000.com points to what I want it to (such as my Radio weblog). This is currently broken because a) I don't know where to do this, and b) egrigg9000.com comes up page not found if you type it in the browser, as if it does not have a DNS lookup entry.
2) Upload html to my section of your hosting service via ftp. This is currently broken because my ftp client says that your server has timed out. (As instructed, I'm using 216.134.209.67).

I have the mail thread from the opensrs.com which I can send if you are interested.

Response:

Your domain name record indicates it was updated with our nameservers today. It takes 24 to 48 hours for most ISPs to pick up a nameserver change, so it will start resolving to our system within the next day or two.

If you want to redirect your domain to another site once it starts resolving here, you can either do that with the URL Redirect icon in your control panel or by setting up a meta-refresh redirect in your HTML code.

The IP address for the server where your account is located was changed recently. It is now 63.247.131.4. You should be able to use that to connect via FTP.
