I've had the new camera about 3 months now, and I haven't used any of the manual controls. In fact, I hadn't even really come up with a reason--keeping in mind my complete lack of photographic traditional training--why I might need to use them, other than maybe an occasional manual focus, for the convenience of pre-focusing.

But tonight my son, Seth, wanted me to take pictures of him doing jumping and spinning karate moves. Conveniently, I had a borrowed tripod I wanted to try out, and nobody else was home to distract me.

So we took a series of pictures indoors (it was raining, so outside was out of the question, and the indoor light was poor). Flash was out of the question, I obviously needed burst mode. Since he was moving so much, it was clearly easier to use manual focus than to keep pre-focusing. And eventually, I figured out I would do much better if I used shutter-priority mode to freeze the action. So, after considerable, pleasant trial-and-error, we got some decent shots. He was certainly pleased.

SO annoying how the keep you on the line, listening to a very long-winded pitch for high-margin products, such as credit card insurance, while "the system verifies" you. I have taken to just hanging up, assuming the verification will go through.
