I see in Saturday's Irish Times that the M50 work at Carrickmines is to go ahead as planned. This is a victory for common sense and for the motorists of Dublin, not to mention the residents of Ballinteer and Dundrum who have to put up with heavy traffic coming from and going to the present M50 terminus and the N11. Some will no doubt be dismayed by the decision saying that we need to preserve our heritage. While I have some sympathy for the notion of preserving the past it must not be at the cost of our present needs, and believe me, Dublin needs an orbital motorway.
The self-appointed Carrickminders want the minister to change the alignment of the road to avoid the site. Well let's imagine he does and we go through the whole process of environmental impact statements, planning permission land acquisition and so on, again. This has already been done, remember. And let's suppose the work is about to start, what's to stop some other individual or group from objecting to that?
The fact is the procedures for deciding the route of the M50 were followed and a decision was reached. If we allow every special interest group to object after the fact, then nothing will get done.
