I'm blogging this from Galway, my former stomping grounds and the city I consider my spiritual home. Now some of you reading this may be wondering why I didn't call to say I was coming or even to say "I'm here. Fancy going for a drink?" Well my original plans involved getting in to Galway fairly early turning up at people's places of employment and surprising them. Unfortunately, best laid plans and all that...

I had wanted to leave at about 11am and get into Galway at about 2pm. Unfortunately, I got held up in the office so I didn't get out until Noon. Then I realised I didn't have enough petrol so I had to detour to fill the tank.( 80.9 in Mount Brown, if you're interested. this meant I didn't get out of Dublin until about 12:45. Then I needed to stop in Athlone. I pulled out of the McDonald's just before the Athlone bypass at about 3pm. And then of course I hit Loughrea. Traffic came to a standstill several miles outside Loughrea and I didn't clear the town until 4.10. After that I sped through Craughwell (in a figurative sense rather than a legal one) until a few miles from Oranmore when the traffic came to a complete and utter halt due to race week. It took half an hour to make ajourney of five miles to the Oranmore bypass.

In the end, I didn't pull into the driveway of the house in Moyola Park until after 5pm. I fully intended at that time to ring a few people but I sat down for a few moments and promptly fell asleep. So my sincere apologies to everyone in Galway. I'm off again first thing in the morning. I have a meeting in Loughrea (check out e-Thursday in the Indo in a few weeks) in the morning and then it's straight back to Dublin.

My new Powerbook G4 arrived last Thursday, a day or two after my iStream service was switched on. I had ordered the 12" model with an Airport Extreme (Wi-Fi) card and an Airport base station. I waited until the weekend to set up Airport as I figured it would take most of an afternoon to set up. How wrong I was. I had the whole thing set up in no more than 10 minutes (not counting unpacking and finding a free power socket.) I simply cabled the base station to my DSL modem, then cabled my iMac to the base station. Ran the software, entered my Eircom iStream username and password and that was it.

I can now roam around the house surfing the Web. Well actually I sit in front of the telly surfing the Web.

I've just re-read that last sentence. I need to get out more.
