I was at the book store yesterday buying books - one of my passions is reading, as I was searching for something that caught my eye in the teen section, this poor kid was picking out books to read and her mother wouldn't let her even look at the storyline on the back of the book before she read it. This poor kid she just wanted to read a book. Her mother should be happy she's not out partying but at the bookstore buying books. I know from experience, when my mom said I couldn't do something, I definetly wanted to do it more. That kid will be back at the bookstore, buying the book she wants to read, hiding it from her mother because mom said no. She had that look on her face like WTF? why not that book or that book or that book? Geez, let the girl read what she wants - its not like she was in the sex section of the bookstore or even the fiction horror section or the romance section - she was in the teen section of the store. Parents that censor kids reading habits, i don't get at all. Honestly there are some books in the teen section, I didn't get til I was an adult but not because it was about love or sex but because it was different wrinkles in time and at 12-13, that just didn't make sense to me. The book this girl picked up and wanted to read and her mother told her to pick another book, she couldn't read that one - I checked it was about best friends on the beach in the summer - actually quite boring for me, I flipped through, didn't see anything remotely wrong with it. Now flowers in the attic, i get why my mom didn't want me to read it now but when I was a kid, i didn't get it.
If your kid is in the bookstore instead of hanging out with friends or doing drugs, let them read what they want to read cuz maybe they'll grow up to have tons of books and a love for reading. If you censor what they read and don't allow them to make choices on their own, they are going to rebel.
