On Amazon for $199 with rebates: palmOne Treo 600 PDA Phone - Next Generation (AT&T)

This is to be expected considering that the new Sprint Treo 650 is showing up in some stores for pre-release display. It should be on sale some time near the end of the month or sooner. The 600 is by no means obsolete, and in a way, might compete with this newer model considering a price point in this range.

New WLANs Still Don't Come Easy

This is from eWeek describing Cisco Systems, Inc. announcement that it will provide a dual-band version of its 1100 Series access point meant for customers who wish to support data and voice on a wireless LAN.

The Aironet 1130AG will include two integrated radios, one that supports 802.11a at 5GHz and one that supports 802.11g at 2.4GHz, which can run simultaneously, according to sources familiar with the plans. While the two protocols offer similar speeds, the 5GHz range, with its increased number of channels, is considered better for voice traffic.

The article quotes Dr. Halamka of Harvard Medical School and CareGroup Health System: "As we add wireless voice over IP, we will need more channels and more bandwidth, which are available with 802.11a."

This underscores the need to develop a wireless handheld with a microphone of good quality so that this function can be conveniently accessed. I don't know of a wireless handheld that has a good microphone or microphone jack. I haven't tested HP's iPAQ H6315 which should have an acceptable mic since it also is a cell phone.

in a related story....Cisco to Buy SIP Trailblazer Dynamicsoft

Cisco Systems Inc. announced Monday (from Sept. 15th) that it will buy SIP infrastructure provider Dynamicsoft Inc., which has been instrumental in developing the SIP (session initiation protocol) VOIP signaling protocol and its attendant network servers. The deal represents Cisco's second VOIP acquisition in as many months.

ImpactRX to outfit more than 1000 physicians with Treos

This is a story I found on the TreoCentral Web site. It's expected that ImpactRX, a pharmaceutical market research firm, will supply more than 1000 physicians by March 2005.

The devices will be used to collect information that is used to measure the relationship between pharmaceutical sales activities and physician prescribing behavior.

"Search Champs" get opportunity to collaborate with MSN Search team

Scoble, Winer, Weinberger et. al. are in Redmond to learn about Microsoft new search software. It's a good idea to get bloggers intimately involved in the process of software development--marketing for gratis.

I attended Scoble's geek dinner here in NYC a while back, and now he's holding one to coincide with the Search Champs. It might be time to hold a medical wireless geek dinner in Manhattan. The annoucements of new wireless products are coming fast and furiously--time for punditry about how healthcare can utilize these off-the-shelf products.

palmOne announces the T5 today

The main feature of this new device is how it make it 256 MB of internal memory available. This flash memory is not dependent on power and essentially is equivalent to storage on a SD card.

If fact, it can be used as you would an SD card. You can plug this unit into your pc and it will be recognize 160 MB as a separate drive.

Brighthand has a nice summary of the press release. Like its predecessor, this model will have a 320-by-480-pixel (HVGA) screen that offers both portrait and landscape modes.

For wireless capabilities, I'm assuming that it will be compatible with the SD WiFi card ($129) that palmOne is now making available for the T3 and Zire 72 handhelds. It will have Bluetooth.

The T5 runs the Garnet OS with a 416MHz Intel XScale processor. This is part of the PXA270 processors, but not the fastest.

This unit marks the switch to a multi-connector instead of the universal connector that palmOne has traditionally used with all of its handhelds. The advantages of this new connector are: allows sync'ing with a cradle or a USB cable, audio out capabilities and trickle charging via USB. This seems to be a permanent change, and it is likely that the new Treo 650 will use this new standard.

Samsung's Wireless Handheld: Nexio XP30

This is also what I saw when I visited the Samsung Experience at the Time Warner Center. It's a WinCE PDA with a 5" wide screen with an Intel PXA250 400MHz processor and built-in WiFi (802.11b). It comes with a leather flap that serves as a protective cover or you can purchase a flip cover that has a keyboard.

It's available on dynamism.com (you need to contact them for a price quote). They say:

The Nexio S160 has a brilliant 5" wide-aspect transflective Color LCD screen. For outdoor use, the screen's illumination can be turned off at the touch of a button. The integrated VGA-out port (required dongle is included) is ideal for giving presentations.

MobileMag has a review, and so Geek.com. This form factor might be the ideal solution for a wireless handheld that you can slip into a lab coat pocket.
