This plan is based on the old metaphor / replication idea of technology, filling a typical kind of gap that distance learning, students working and a lack of community in this day 'n age brings about.

For that reason I'm a little suspicious of it :o) BUT, instant messaging IS the second most used communication technology, IS used primarily among young folk and IS a pretty darn effective tool for facilitating individual relationships and group dynamics (I think... anyone got any concrete research out there?)

So, basically this involves getting all your learners onto IM, facilitating the sharing of usernames, talking about and demonstrating how this could be of benefit to them and then seeing how it goes....

Ace! Randy updates us on how he's going incorporating weblogs into WebCT (if that isn't subversive I don't know what is ;O)

"...The system I'm using, and the setup have been described earlier. Students have been using the resources in the courses associated with the WebCT sites. The weblog format allows easy inclusion of contextual links to the resources, plus the Search box gives them access to resource collection.

Currently, there's over 110 resources relating to
Web Development / Web Programming. There's 20 C++ resources, and 32 PHP resources. These are items I've gleaned, ranging from tutorials, to code snippets, to industry news - all geared at the learning outcomes of the courses I teach, and to encouraging students look beyond the content of a single course.

I also use one category of the course weblog as a means to provide announcements across all courses. These announcements range from college closings, to last date to withdraw, to reminders of due dates, etc...."
