Edu Wiki Contenders

Alrightythen, getting to the point some people round here really want Wikis so I've (following on from all the excellent help I got when I first brought this up!) figured out a kinda shortlist. They're looking for simple solutions (not course management systems... sorry Mark :o) that once installed by tech we can moreorless run by ourselves. I thought I'd share the list as it took me so bloody long to sort out and I've probably made some glaring omissions... if so, could you help me out :o)

p.s. We're looking at collaborative 'material' creation and also creating an organic virtual organization!

Hosted by someone else:

Edit Me: http://editme.com/
This is probably the nicest of the lot... it's also hosted so would mean we don't have any problems there, it's got the nicest text editor and does everything we would need... what's the catch, it's US$5 a month (could we petty cash these in your facs?) Go here http://www.editme.com/Demo to play around. (You can also set it to send you emails when people comment or edit the sites :o)

Teaching Wiki: http://teachingwiki.org/ow.asp?TeachingWiki
Is hosted and free... you can create a new page and edit it by popping the name in the "Or go to a page directly, or create a new page by entering its name here:" box at the bottom here: http://teachingwiki.org/ow.asp?p=FindPage&;txt=UserPreferences
It's pretty simple but not really 'ours' if you know what I mean.

Swiki: http://www.swiki.net
This would be absolutely perfect if it worked consistently, you can do all sorts including easily putting images in, controlling access and it's free. This also has a little checkbox so you can choose to be notified anytime a page is changed. But it only seems to work half of the time.

Hosted by us:

PHPwiki: http://phpwiki.sourceforge.net/phpwiki/
You can play with this here: http://phpwiki.sourceforge.net/phpwiki/SandBox You'll need to login (use any WikiWord (i.e. a word made up of two or more words with their first letters capitilized, i.e. JamesFarmer or FishAndChips... you also use this to create new pages... see here: http://phpwiki.sourceforge.net/phpwiki/AddingPages

It's pretty basic but has some handy editing stuff at the bottom... I guess the question is, do we wanna just keep it simple or will the 'codish' simplicity scare off students?

I'm REALLY keen on people having the ability to 'subscribe ' to pages through email (that is receive an email if someone makes a comment on or edits their page)... I don't think this has this.

MoinMoin: http://moin.sourceforge.net/
Pretty simple & easy wiki... some of the features are in the link above. I've been reliably informed that this is a good if unspectacular solution, here's an example of it in use: http://wyclif.stockton.edu/teachingwiki. If you wanna have a play around then go here: http://moinmoin.wikiwikiweb.de/WikiSandBox Just roll to the bottom and click on 'Edit This Page' and add your piece :o)

There are some subscription by email things with this but I haven't been able to try them out.

Blogware prices cont.

Sorry to carry on on the blogware front but this is the only service (and these are close) that fits what you're saying should be the norm ($5 p/m for a basic blog). The rest of them don't. And even if you are charging $5 p/m then that's still $60 p/yr... and none of the ones charging around $120 p/yr offer domain names other than ones they're hosting... I think... please prove me wrong... I really would like to have a choice as regards Userland ($40 a year) but can't see (apart form a couple of tweaks and a bit more storage) why I would bother?

Blogger Comments

Ick, you've gotta have a blogger sign-in to use blogger comments... slightly evil?
