Going it alone

OK... there comes a time when you've got to cut the cord, flee the nest, through caution to the wind and break out of the box (?)... well, rather more simply put there comes a time when you have to stop relying on other people to get stuff done and just do it yourself.

So... I figure that.

  • Instead of begging for hosting / server space I should just get my own bloody domain and web hosting service.
  • Instead of crawling for technical help ('oh, what is PHP grand technocrat?') I should, at the very least, figure out how I can install & set-up something like Wordpress or Swiki or PMWiki on my own.
  • Instead of saying to the academics I work with "Well, you can use this but you'll have to go and do this and this and you'll need this and that and so on" I shall say "Sure, I'll host you :o)... just go here and do this"

'Tis time to self-empower I think! However... to self-empower I first need to know what the hell it is I should do.

Going from loobylu I thought a good Aussie hosting setup looks like Segment Publishing, but I don't know if AU$22 a month for what they're offering is a rip off or not... is there much better out there?

In terms of domain names it looks like a .org would be best and they seem to be AU$33 a year... again, reasonable?

I figured plans like Segment's would have all the dbase software installed to simply let me install whatever (well, All I really want is Wordpress or Swiki and a couple of others ... without having to train up as a network engineer ;o)... am I totally off the mark here, will I get scorched?

p.s. to all the people that are / have helped me this is no indication of dissatisfaction whatsoever with your help... just me wanting to stand up on me own two feet and stop bothering you :o)

Google Zeitgeist

How cool is this! Google Zeitgeist - Search patterns, trends, and surprises according to Google. I wonder if this is automated... if it is I wonder if we could get institutional zeitgeist results from, for example, here? How good would that be!
