My brother....
...was in 22 moto cross race events this year....that's 98 motos or 49 races in multiple classes....
He says: "One concussion, two cracked ribs, some bruises, some lost skin - not bad for a whole year!"

I think he is crazy, but he is in amazing shape....

Ben Schott is a photographer and the author of two books, Schott's Original Miscellany and Schott's Food & Drink Miscellany. A friend gave me the latter recently and it is an astounding collection of information and trivia.
Which other food book can tell you the accepted procedure when drinking from a Loving Cup; which potatoes are best for mashing; how to fold your napkins into a variety of pleasing shapes; the correct technique for lighting a cigar; or how to make the legendary 'Monster Egg'?

"The admission may not earn me any points in politically correct audiophile circles, but Apple's cute little iPod was the product I most enjoyed using this past year," writes John Atkinson for Stereophile.

"Its large-capacity hard drive and ability to play back uncompressed AIF and WAV files pushes it ahead of run-of-the-mill portable players, while its intuitive, playlist-based interface is a harbinger of how all of us will be surfing our recorded music libraries in the near future," he said.

Now if it only had an S/PDIF digital output!"

Yes, to the S/PDIF output - but on the dock...

Elderly cockroaches get arthritis and become confused and prone to wandering.
Case Western Reserve University researchers reported in the Journal of Experimental Biology that as the roach's life wanes between 60-65 weeks after the onset of adulthood, and the cockroach slows down, experiences stiff joints and has problems climbing and a decreased spontaneous fleeing response. Death comes shortly after the onset of these movement problems.

My dad had terrible arthritis in both hands. They used to stay half-closed and he would force each open with the other hand. Then he started drinking a shot of apple vinegar diluted in a glass of water every morning and within a few months his hands were fine. Amazing, when one can see that change with one's own eyes. I read somewhere that Chinese think that Westerners don't take enough vinegar and that this might be a source for many health problems. Now back to cockroaches.....I had never seen one in Cologne....saw my first cockroach in Taiwan in 1978....of course they were around in Boston.....but not here in Santa Fe, because it is too dry for them.....ah, another reason to enjoy living here.

One reader writes in regarding the post today about cellphones placing people at the scenes of crimes:
I work for a Federal law enforcement agency and we've seen some doozies with cellphones. My favorite to date is a picture we got from someone's phone of her boyfriend holding up a sack of money and a sack of crack cocaine, hamming it up for the girlfriend. She was foolish enough to send the picture using her phone, which, once we subpoenaed her phone logs, including the pictures, gave us the date, time, place, etc., as well as a lovely picture to show in court.

Away and out of the gene-pool with you!
