It is misleading for a letter, or for any graphic symbol, to have two different designs. Confusion might set in when school children are taught to recognize words even before they have learned to recognize different symbols for the same letter. To remedy this, Alphabet 26, a plan based upon the logic of consistency, proposed that of the 19 letters that have dissimilar symbols 15 letters should use the uppercase designs and 4 letters should use the lowercase designs. The other 7 letters already have identical symbols.

Jeffrey Zeldman, Tears for Istanbul:

"The old gentleman turned to us, smiled, bowed, and strolled away before we could thank him... That, in a nutshell, is Istanbul to me. I never met kinder or more gracious people anywhere."
I was there in March, 2000, and I agree wholeheartedly.

I would have to agree. We were in Istanbul in 1996 and again in 1997 and I enjoyed the city and its people very much.

According to Wikipedia: [Van Halen's] debut, self-titled album was released in 1978 and featured a new soloing technique called tapping: a technique utilizing both left and right hands on the guitar neck. Leading up to the release of the album, Eddie would play his solos with his back to the audience during club dates, to hide his technique until the album came out.

Yahoo! has sponsored the ornament atop the Xmas tree in NYC's Herald Square this year: a WiFi antenna broadcasting an open connection to the Manhattan passers-by who want to get in the holiday spirit with a little open spectrum. What a brilliant idea.

Check out the great photos. Will we have to wait until 2025?

The new Southern Caifornian NRDC headquarters building may be the greenest in the country. No one quite knows, but it's clearly a sign of what's possible: "Truth be told, no one can really verify the claim that the Robert Redford Building is the nation's greenest structure...

...It's about time that the all-American lust for superlatives and habit of one-upmanship be embraced by the building industry -- to see not only who can design the tallest and glitziest, but also who can out-green the rest."...

..."NRDC's new headquarters, however, uses 60 to 75 percent less energy than a conventional building of its size, gets 100 percent of its energy from carbon-free renewables, and consumes 60 percent less drinking water. As Watson estimated, 'If all commercial buildings in the U.S. were as efficient as ours, the country would achieve 70 percent of its Kyoto Protocol obligation.'"

Lets one-up the rest of the world with more efficient cars and buildings. Somebody has to get the party started and if not now, when?

The Italian association was founded in 1986 and its birth was celebrated in Barolo in the Langhe district in the province of Cuneo. The international movement was founded in Paris in 1989.

The definition contained in its Manifesto conveys a very clear message: a movement for the protection of the right to taste. If Slow Food has grown into a large-scale international movement, with over 60,000 members in all five continents (of whom about half in Italy), it is precisely because the concept of ‘pleasure’ is a complex one encompassing many meanings and involving many aspects of our existence.

If we wish to enjoy the pleasure which this world can give us, we have to give of our all to strike the right balance of respect and exchange with nature and the environment. This is why we like to define ourselves as ‘eco-gastronomes’ . The fact is that our pleasure cannot be disconnected from the pleasure of others, but it is likewise connected to the equilibrium we manage to preserve (and in many cases revive) with the environment we live in.
I have eaten in Slow Food restaurants in Italy, which are identifiable by the above snail symbol - there is that Spiral again.....and they were some of the best meals I have had. If you are planning a vacation you should check the Slow Food web site for participating restaurants worldwide.
