Microsoft VM, where art thou?

One of my team mates wants to know, does anyone care anymore about the Microsoft VM?  In case your wondering, after January 4th we are no longer able to service or redistribute the Microsoft VM, period.  So why would you care?  Because you may have gotten used to having it.  It has been deployed on tons of Windows machines and most people don't think about it unless Windows Update recommends an update.  It is responsible for small lunch-time browser games you play or telling you what your mortgage payments are going to be. So David was wondering why people don't seem very concerned about it.

Well, you should be.  Skip to the future on January 5th or beyond when something like a security bug is found.  We CANNOT SERVICE OR REDISTRIBUTE the Microsoft VM which logically means the only way we can protect a computer is to disable the Microsoft VM, which means that your existing applets or applications that rely on the Microsoft VM will not work.

I recommend the following:

  • Get over to David's site and give him your thoughts on this or send them to me.
  • Go to http://www.microsoft.com/java to get the overview, then go to the Developer FAQ to understand your migration options.
  • Begin thinking about how you want to migrate your applets or applications off the Microsoft VM.

I know this may be a pain because you "wrote those a long time ago", but in the end you will be happy you migrated now instead of waiting to see what may happen next year.
