PERSONALBLOG---Like so many people I know I have had a hard time sleeping lately. The war has overshadowed normal life struggles like work, family and other stresses. "The Genie is out of the box," I have heard some say. I have personally been opposed to the war but now find myself conflicted. The issue, to me, is not, "do we go to war?" It's obviously too late for that. The question now is where do we go from here? I am a firm believer that we need to support our troops. My greatest concern now is finding an exit strategy. I am afraid that while it may take us months to win the war, it may take us decades to win the peace. Winning the peace is going to be an elusive goal. Every war since WW2 has been a limited war. We have a bad track record when it comes to disengagement. We are still in Korea, for example.
Then I wonder, will there be a peace? Did WW3 start on Spetember 11, 2001? Is Iraq just another theater in a new global struggle? Is this a struggle more in keeping with the great crusades than the last big wars? Those are the kinds of things I think about as the sun comes up in San Jose and night falls in Baghdad.
