PERSONALBLOG---This really sucked. Friday I rode my bike to work, swam at lunch and rode home. I remember on my ride to work telling Bob, my riding buddy, that I felt like my Wheaties hadn't kicked in yet.
In truth I have been feeling tired for awhile. Friday evening my chest muscles felt tight. I figured that was from the swimming. It got progressively worse though.
At about two in the morning I woke up. I had a great pain in my chest. I could hardly breathe. I thought, to quote Fred Sanford, "this is the big one."
I woke up Susie. She was really scared when I told her what was going on. I told her to call Kaiser emergency or 911. 911 summoned the paramedics. I could hear the ambulance coming. I was convinced it must be a heart attack.
Soon they arrived. They were very nice and professional. They took my EKG and my heart looked okay. I was having severe chills. They wrapped me in a blanket and took me to Kaiser hospital, Santa Teresa.
After my heart was ruled out as the culprit I thought perhaps I had become dehydrated. That also turned out to be false. They sent me in for a chest X-ray. I turned out to have pneumonia and pleurisy. I guess when it got in the lining of my lungs it caused the pain.
They gave me intravenous painkiller and anti-biotic drugs. Despite the great riding weather I have spent the three-day weekend sleeping a lot. I watched the war unfold, and several baseball games on TV. I sorted through piles of old family photos I had almost forgotten about.
I've just generally relaxed.
