Sue and I at the Chauncy's

Sad day for California

This is a sad time to be a Californian. First off, neither the Giants nor the A's are advancing past the first playoff round.

Second off we just did something really stupid when we recalled a sitting governor just months after electing him to office. Why was this stupid?

  • There was no valid reason for it to happen. There was nothing the Governor had done since being elected that was acceptable grounds for impeachment
  • It seems an act of capriciousness. An elected official is elected for a set term to represent the people and to do the right thing. Sometimes the right thing is not the popular thing. When right and popularity clash an elected leader has to be free to follow his or her conscience without fear of capricious recall. To not have this freedom forces the elected leader to become a follower, a follower of popularity polls.
  • It is a corruption of the spirit of the recall process. The folks who gathered recall petitions did so because they were paid to do so! The recall did not happen because so many Californians were angry that they went out and solicited signatures. It happened because Darryl Issa spent a couple of million bucks to professional signature collectors.
  • We elected Arnie, I believe, to the job because he had a good image and not because of his experience, willingness to take a stand or debate issues. We elected an actor, a person whose job it is to pretend he is something he is not. I believe the people of California elected a phony.
