Another day in Paradise
Steve Sloan's weblog. A bit tech, a bit bikes, a bit family, a bit friends, a bit scooters, a bit photo, a bit trains, a bit fun. Eight bits; that's a byte!

Summer, even the Indian version, is over!

It is turning cool. It seems to be over, it needs to be over, we need rain to put out the fires! Southern California is burning. Besides the fires, it has been a bad week for many people. We've been sick, a friend's dog was killed, another friend was in a car accident.

O'Reilly Conference

I have been at the O'Reilly Mac OS X Conference. The Mac OS X conference is great. Last night's talk by Srinidhi Varadarajan, Ph.D. was awe inspiring! What they accomplished at Virginia Tech is a real example of what can be done. They built the worlds third largest super-computer, a cluster of 1100 Mac G5's running Mac OS X, in about 6 months! Why did they choose Mac G5s? Because they provided the best solution as measured in cost/performance!

This conference came the week after the release of Panther. (NOTE: My personal copy came yesterday.) This is my second time at the O'Reilly Mac OS X Conference and there are a lot more people here than last time. Maybe this is a sign of more interest in the platform, more strength in the economy, or both. I have learned a lot and have really enjoyed the experience.

Going South

I am leaving for a few days to go to a union meeting in Anaheim. I wonder what it will be like after the fires?
