Leigh band does it again! Kenneth, is in high school marching band. Last night I attended a marching band competition. His team swept all the awards! Their performance was stunning. Not only was the music great but the on field choreography was magnificent. Their high school, Leigh High in San Jose, has the best high school marching band in the region.
Leigh Marching Band is a model of good organization and a model of teamwork. It is so good some parents at other schools think it is selective and auditions the kids in it. No, Leigh Marching Band is not selective, it is inclusive. Any kid at Leigh High School who wants to be in the band is welcomed into the band. There is no audition process. Nobody is kicked out of the band due to lack of talent. Rather than eliminate struggling kids, they work with them. Kids share their knowledge with each other. It is basic peer mentoring. So, when a kid needs help with a performance issue there is a strong peer support structure. Chains of command are short, areas of responsibility are clear and there is effective big-picture-management without the need for micromanagement. Excellence is encouraged, in fact it is nurtured. The kids work hard and they are proud of their accomplishments. They take ownership of their role in the organization. Great things are thus accomplished by a great organization made up of mostly people under 18!
