George Wood's Weblog

My good friend and colleague George Wood, who works at Radio Sweden, has also opened a personal Weblog. George is anxious to point out that this is a personal blog, and any opinions epxressed there are his, not his employer's. Give George some support by looking at http://radio.weblogs.com/0123269/

Jay Garner's speech to the Iraqi people

Tarek and I both watched this on TV. It was apparently a radio address, not made for TV, but someone filmed it anyway. Both of us, independently (he in Cairo, me in The Netherlands) noticed that Jay Garner kept using his finger to point at the camera, which is considered an impolite gesture in that part of the world. It has been a bad day for the Americans - the explosions and deaths in Baghdad this morning, and now this. It beggars belief that nobody warned Mr Garner - who by all accounts is a good and decent man - about what gestures to avoid. Such attention to detail makes all the difference when you're trying to win the hearts and mind of a sceptical population.

Five dead in attack on AIR Kashmir

Five people were killed when militants carried out an apparent suicide attack on the complex housing All India Radio and Doodarshan in Srinagar earlier today. The attack triggered a gun battle in which give people died, including two security guards. Seven other security guards were injured.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad condemned the attack and said security arrangements at AIR and Doordarshan would be strengthened to foil any such attempts in future.

Are you protected?

Two nasties have appeared in the last 48 hours:

Backdoor.OptixPro.13 is a Trojan horse that gives a remote attacker full remote access to your computer. By default, the Trojan opens port 3410 for listening.

W32.HLLW.Kullan is a worm with backdoor capabilities. It spreads across networks by copying itself to the Start Menu on computers that are accessible from an infected machine. The most common reason for this access is an unprotected shared resource. Some of the backdoor capabilities include the retrieval of information relating to the computer and operating system type, the logging of keystrokes, and the examination of e-mail.

If you use Norton Antivirus, as I do, you might consider going to this page and downloading the latest virus definitions with the intelligent updater. The current file is dated 25th April. The next scheduled Live Update file isn't due till 30th April. Symantec might decide to release one ahead of time, but why wait?

And of course, if you use a Mac, you need do nothing except sit back and laugh at us poor Windows users :-)
