No rest for Commando Solo
Just days after returning from its mission in Iraq, a Commando Solo aircraft has been in action again, this time relaying the programmes of Radio and TV Marti to Cuba. It's well known that TV Marti is jammed across much of Cuba, and therefore reaches only a limited audience. On Tuesday evening, a four hour test transmission was made from an EC-130 Commando Solo aircraft flying inside US airspace, and officials in Washington are now assessing the technical success, or otherwise, of the mission.
The Cuban press, controlled of course by the Castro regime, claims the transmissions were unsuccessful, and says that if the US continues with them, it might retaliate by turning up the power of some of its mediumwave transmitters, which will cause interference to AM stations in South Florida.
The US administration should not dismiss such threats. The transmitters exist, and can be used. I remember back in the 1980's hearing a very strong signal from Cuba on 600 kHz during local evening hours in Philadelphia! If this happens again, you can be sure that the National Association of Broadcasters and other trade organisations will protest to Washington.
