A Patient's Choice
Is choice important in a patient's life? Ellen Langer (Harvard) and Judith Rodin (Yale) did a study of nursing home patients and choice. They allowed some patients to choose which type of omelet they could eat in the morning and which plants were in their rooms. Others could not choose.
Those who were allowed to choose lived significantly longer and were happier and more active.
