Speaking of trout... Dave Lewis, of Performance Fly Rods, has a
beautiful photo essay on September trouting on his website. To view it,
In it, he extolls the virtues of small mountain streams, where richly
colored trout -- in this case, browns, bulls and Westslope cutts --
dwell. Looks like he had a heck of a day, and we get to enjoy it along
with him.
BTW, I wrote a piece on September trout that appears in the current
Wisconsin Outdoor News.
(You won't be able to read it online, tho, as there is a bowhunting
article featured for this issue.) Pick up a copy at your favorite
newsstand.
I gotta admit, Dave's photos are better than
mine. Time to get out there again!

Anyone seriously interested in the stocking of trout and salmon in Lake
Michigan ought to consider attending the Lake Michigan Salmon and Trout
Stocking Conference, Sept. 24 at UW-Parkside in Kenosha.
The conference will run from 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., starting with a
continental breakfast. The Lake Michigan management agencies are
considering reduced stocking because Chinook salmon growth rates have
declined, forage abundance is down and there is concern that the
predator/prey balance in Lake Michigan and Lake Huron may be in danger
of collapsing in the near future.
For more information, or to register, contact Phil Moy, UW Sea Grant,
at 920-683-4697 or pmoy@uwc.edu. You can also find information and
directions here.
The conference fee is $10. Space is limited, and Sea Grant would like you to register by Sept. 19.
