Well, let's face it.  I get asked if I am a relative to Don Box - and I bet that I am asked more often than he is asked about me.  And we don't have to go into details about why that is.  But, I appreciate Seth putting my picture before Don's on a TechEd picture page.

Another consultant asked me the other day about how to setup compression on W2K3 Server.  I didn't know but he found some articles, did some configuration, and with no other 3rd party products, now has added compression to his server (as long as the client supports it).  He told me that it made a little improvement for clients with quality high-speed connections; however, it made drastic improvement for those who were on low-speed connections like dial-up.

For more information on configuring, see:  Donnie Mack's HOW-TO, a TechNet article, and Brad Wilson's article.

Today, I recieved this email:

My problem is that I have .NET framework installed on a windows 2003 domain controller when I try to run a web form from this machine I get this error: Access to the path "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET Files\root\98944309\ba51e3d9" is denied.

I have tried setting permissions for the ASPNET account on the Temporary ASP.NET Files directory. Nothing seems to work.

There are several issues with this scenario.  First, with W2K3 Server, "Network Service" is the account that the worker process runs under.  And by the way, it is not aspnet_wp.exe anymore either.

Second, there were issues with running ASP.NET in v1.X days on a domain controller; however, that's not an issue on W2K3 Server.  But, there is a problem in promoting a server (i.e. running dcpromo) after installing ASP.NET.

So, if you ever this error, be sure to run "aspnet -i".  It fixes all sorts of issues including setting the proper permissions.
