Rebecca's Blog
Mostly news stories or articles of interest in the future to me. I'll eventually get around to adding my own ideas and stories on a more regular basis.

And my quotes for this fine Wednesday:

Dorothy Day. "I have long since come to believe that people never mean half of what they say, and that it is best to disregard their talk and judge only their actions."

Andre Gide. "There are admirable potentialities in every human being. Believe in your strength and your youth. Learn to repeat endlessly to yourself, 'It all depends on me.'"

From [Managing Product Development] there was this article:Predicting Project Completion.

From my handout, here are the three things I think are critical to being able to predict project completion:

  1. Estimating what you have to do. Do you know what you want to accomplish and how well can you estimate that?
  2. Measuring along the way. What quantitative and qualitative measurements can you take during the project to refine your prediction?
  3. Knowing what done means. If you know how good the product has to be and how much content the product requires, you can know what done means. Otherwise you're never done.

[The Occupational Adventure (sm) Blog]'s article on Passion as a competitive advantage discusses a Fortune article that goes into getting your employees excited/motivated.  What I liked was this idea (and I forwarded it to my boss):

One place to start: Put these 12 statements in front of each of your employees and ask them to agree or disagree. The more agreement you get, the more engaged -- and productive -- your people will be, and the more your customers will want to come back.

* I know what is expected of me at work.

* I have the materials and equipment I need to do my work.

* I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day.

* In the past week I have been praised for doing good work.

* My supervisor or someone else at work seems to care about me as a person.

* Someone at work encourages my development.

* My opinions seem to count.

* My company's mission makes me feel my job is important.

* I have a best friend at work.

* In the past six months someone at work has talked to me about my progress.

* I have had opportunities to learn and grow at work.
