Mostly news stories or articles of interest in the future to me. I'll eventually get around to adding my own ideas and stories on a more regular basis.

Tonight when I arrived at the Children's home for the monthly visit with the Jaycees, we found out that they were having a "volunteers appreciation dinner"...but something had happened to our invitation.  They ushered us in to visit with some other volunteers and such.  One coordinator read a story to us.  I love children's books.  And she was just like a 3rd grade teacher that read the story perfectly.  I love those moments when I feel 8 again.  At the end she read us a poem that she had written about volunteering.  It was very touching.  My favorite part was:

Dreams are important for children
to have, and in which to learn to believe.
And it is so important to have special people
to support and nourish children's dreams.

Then we finally made it back to see the 12-13 kiddo's that were around.  They were wound up!  But, we had a good time.  One little boy that's been there for a while (Kyle...probably about 10) made me a little paper jack-o-lantern to decorate my apartment with.  A couple of months ago he gave me a plant.  Lots of hugs and high-five's on the way out.

Moments like these remind me that the world is so much bigger than me.  And that I can make a difference well beyond my today and my front door.

I booked tickets for a Chicago trip today for mid-November.  It's for work, but I plan on doing some touristy stuff while I'm there.  I think it should show me how prepared I am doing a Europe trip on my own that I've been tossing around for a while.  Not exactly, but closer than just thinking about it.

It looks like the hotel has a decent workout facility too, so that the habit won't be wasted. I've lost 10 pounds in the past two weeks, so I want to keep it up.

This weekend I picked up an old (new for me) Indigo Girls CD and I've already picked a favorite song that keeps preventing me from listening to the rest of the album.  I'm only in my car typically for like 5-10 minutes at a time and to really sing the song well (or at least for it to feel good singing) I have to sing it twice so my voice can get all scratchy.  :)  The song is Romeo & Juliet.  It doesn't really have any ties to my life, but it's girl singing that's kinda screamy, but also poetic and nice.

In the past few months I've been exploring what my "focus" should be.  Something that would allow me to stay in the techy/software/asp field, but allow me upward growth.  A friend suggested Business Process Management and I've been slowly reading a book, but decided to do some rearch today and came across this defintion in an article:

BPM (Business Process Management): enables the design, analysis, optimization, and automation of business processes. It does this by separating process logic from the applications that run them; managing relationships among process participants; integrating internal and external process resources; and monitoring process performance

It does indeed sound fun. You get to help with the company flow and bottom line, you get to work with developers and business people, you get to do process stuff (okay, it's part of the name, but..).  My question is - how do you get started in that field?  Business analyst?  And some more questions from that:  How can I get experience at my current company? How can I get experience in my free time?
