The Oracle blogging scene goes from strength to strength; OTN now features a RSS News Syndication page that contains pointers to websites and RSS feeds for bloggers both inside and outside of Oracle, whilst Babu's Oracle Feed of Feeds page brings together all the latest postings from the Oracle blogging community.

Back in June of this year, I posted a message to comp.databases.oracle.misc asking if there were any other Oracle bloggers out there; since then i've come across excellent sites such as Steve Muench's 'Dive Into BC4J', Brian Duff's 'Duffblog', Andrej Koelewijn's 'On Java And Oracle', Christoph Cemper's Weblog, and Ameed Taylor's Customization and Extension SIG Weblog. Typically, these are personal sites that are put together in people's spare time, with the main motivation being to pass on knowledge and build a community around the area of Oracle technology they work in.

According to Andrej Koelewijn,

"I've been writing in my blog for 6 months now, 61 entries, 37 comments. Some of these comments were very useful. I think blogs are an excelent way to keep up to date with new technology, be able to read how people are actually using it. It gives you a different perspective than official documentation or marketing brochures."

Whilst Steve Muench says,

"Everything on my blog is self-propelled. Driven out of the desire to share technical information with our users in a new, more incremental way, and frustrated by the fact that I haven't had the time/bandwidth to write the book on BC4J that I've been wanting to."

According to Ameed Taylor,

"I actually started up the blog on our SIG's website mainly as a way to keep our SIG members up to date on customizations and extensions related to the E-Business Suite. (so it was personal initiative). Our SIG only meets in person 3 times a year - At a fall OAUG event in North America, Oracle Apps World In North America and Apps World In Europe. So to keep everyone up to date on the latest developments in between the face to face meetings I figured a blog would be a great way to acheive that.

We get about 100 hits per day with about 60% North America 30% Western Europe and the remainder Southeast Asia. I notice we get a lot more hits when our postings make it onto the popular list on Java Blogs."

As far as my site goes, I get around 250 page views per day, and around 50 downloads of my RSS Feed. The most popular articles so far have been on Oracle 10g New Features, Oracle Discoverer SSO Integration, and Using OLAP Materialized Views, and I regularly get feedback from people who've seen the blog and are looking for a bit of advice on using Oracle's BI&W tools. I've found it an excellent way to properly record technical solutions to problems i've encountered, and as a way of noting down links to useful documents and articles around Oracle technology, and i've made some useful contacts within the Oracle world that I wouldn't have made otherwise.

If you're looking to start an Oracle blog, or your just interested in some of the technologies I talk about, please don't hesitate to contact me at mark@rittman.net. I'm always keen to get feedback on the site, so send in any suggestions on areas you'd like coverered and i'll see what I can do.
