Queen's Park Lunch

I went and had lunch today in the member's dining room at Queen's Park (that is the provincial parliament in Ontario for those Ontario challenged) with Bob Delaney, a fellow Microsoft MVP and the MPP for Mississauga West. I got to sit and watch parliament in action after lunch from the Member's Gallery (I think that is what is called). A particularly raucous Question Period with the premier and both opposition leaders was part of the action.

I thoroughly enjoyed it -- a real bird's eye view of government in action. Thanks to Bob.

P.S. Just to make it official:

Longhorn 2007?

Rumours abound that Longhorn is now scheduled to ship in 2007 rather than 2006. What with the fact that has already been emasculated, this latest rumour if it is true is a huge embarrassment to Microsoft. Jim Allchin took umbrage at the "Shorthorn" label saying it was "derogatory", what will he now respond?

It seems my "Microsoft Osbourning itself" quip is looking more and more like a believable situation.

Further thoughts:

I thought Mooing for Longhorn hoopla had completely died down -- looks like with good reason. All the "evangelism", all the promised "in the Longhorn timeframe" fixes and changes and promises look sillier and sillier now.

I have seen a number of failed computing projects in my years -- and this one has all the trappings and smell of just such a project:

  • huge expectations -- encouraged and pushed but never met
  • constant schedule delays
  • balkanization of developed technology in an attempt to salvage the pieces

If Microsoft has truly bet the farm on Longhorn (as they have proudly indicated in the past) shareholders should really be worried.
