CAN I "QUOTE" YOU ON THAT?.  [The Spoons Experience]

I have noticed that different media outlets will have slightly different quotes from the same source.  I always gave them the benefit of the doubt and told myself that I would probably get it wrong myself if I was standing at the back of the room trying to write down everything that was being said or trying to decipher what I could hear on a poor quality recording.  According to Spoons this may be common practice to change it to their liking.  (LP)

Stuck in Medical Limbo. [Citizen Smash - The Indepundit]

This is, sadly, an old story. Military housing has never been very good, and the Army is without question the worst of the armed services in this area. Some in the Army take a sort of masochistic pride in just how bad their barracks are—which may be part of the reason that it never gets fixed. This problem is much bigger than this story, and it will take many years, several million dollars, and a paradigm shift within the Army to solve it.

While I believe that this story is neither completely accurate (Mr. Benjamin appears to have an agenda), nor representative of how the military takes care of its people, I hope that the attention it has brought to these cases helps to break the apparent logjam at Fort Stewart. My bet is that these soldiers will soon be moved into a local motel until their medical hold is resolved (on an expedited basis), and the CO of the medical facility will get a nice ass-chewing for allowing things to drag out for so long.

When and whether the larger issues will be addressed, however, is another question.

I thought California was the only state with problems and the rest of the country was always looking down their nose at us?

Actually Alabama has got it right and the rest of us should be following.  All these so called "programs" can just go to hell and then the people will decide what's needed and what isn't.  Take the hand that's strangling the American people away from the throat so we can breath and once we are clear headed we can decide what's best.  Never happen - right?

Alabama has enough balls to say enough is enough!  They are trying to remove the hand from the throat (wallet) instead of just rolling over for the government.  Go Alabama! (LP)

Taxabama. There's an interesting column on taxation in the New York Times, using the state of Alabama as an example. Voters recently rejected a tax hike, so the governor has had to cut programs to meet the constraints of the budget.

Alabama's disintegrating government is a problem, certainly, for anyone in the state. But it may also be a harbinger of where the nation is headed. There is... [Right-Thinking from the Left Coast]

The most powerful piece of software inside Microsoft may be the $40 application from a tiny vendor called Userland that Robert Scoble uses to write his weblog.
"I've gotten email from people telling me they have changed their attitude about Microsoft because of my blog," says Scoble. "It helps me share the company's beliefs." It also helps Microsoft hear what the market is saying, both good and bad. "I link to everyone who hates Microsoft, and I send the negative stuff to the executives," he says.

What If....?.  [Wizblog]

Howard Kurtz looks at the phenomenon of "Bush hatred", with lots of quotes from both sides of the political divide. The article centers largely on Jonathan Chait's recent piece, "Why I Hate George Bush". I'm inclined to agree with those who see the spitting fury of the left as born of frustration that they, the wise and enlightened, are not currently in charge of the Congress, the White House, the Supreme Court, or the majority of the Governorships in this country. As to Bush's critics such as Chait, I'd agree with the New York Times' David Brooks, that...

"After you say you hate the way Bush walks and talks, you can never again ask readers to trust your judgment on anything involving Bush."

Picture of the Day

Its that time of the year in the valley.  These are stacked for miles along the roads waiting for trucking to the gin.  The sides of the roads look like there was a freak snowstorm.
