David Hoggard's take on local politics and life in general from Greensboro, NC

Thursday, August 14, 2003

I received this email from my brother Keith in Louisville today after mentioning that I was going to look into how Greensboro's elected official's salaries stack up to our peer cities.  He found a study from a Louisville TV station report that had already done what I was going to do.

From the report on the Mayor's compensation ($12,500 in Greensboro)..."As for [Louisville's] mayor, his yearly salary of $89,000 ranks way under each of the cities we looked at. Abramson makes $100,000 less that the mayor of Austin and $64,000 less than the mayor of Jacksonville."

On the coucil's stipends ($9,500 in Greensboro)... "Louisville's council members are about even in salary, with the four cities we looked at. But some, like [Council member] Denise Bentley, say they're not impressed.  {Bentley replied,] believe me, the position is considered a part time job. I think it pays $42,000 a year and you probably work an average of 16 hours a day. So I'm making below minimum wage."

and from Keith's witty brain... Greensboro should at least consider paying their elected officials a fair and equitable salary based upon the responsibilities of the job and the performance of the individual......or could it be that is already the case?

Although this is an issue I will stay away from like the plague, it needs to be a point of community discussion if Greensboro wants to attract its best and brightest into leadership positions.

Yes, yes, yes!  This morning's News & Record  reports on the UNCG initatives to help bolster Greensboro's flagging economy.  How they got in my computer and snagged my still developing economic development platform is beyond me but what the heck!  A good idea is a good idea!

Actually, the ideas for the community partnering with the academic community sprung from Action Greensboro's very fine McKinsey Report and much credit must be given to AG for persevering to accomplish this all-important piece of the economic puzzle.  I applaud them!

One of Greensboro's great strengths is the quality of the five fine colleges located within the city.  With a total enrollment of over 23,000 students and a whole host of expertise embodied in the faculties, Greensboro must do more to engage them as partners in our future.
