David Hoggard's take on local politics and life in general from Greensboro, NC

I stayed in Charlotte until today because we were making so much progress.  I also had to put the finishing touches on another smaller job that popped up in another neighborhood.  But I vowed to leave by noon so I could get back in plenty of time to get ready for the Grimsley playoff game (Jinni and I are head of chaperones for the Whirlie Band).   I left at 2:00p.

During the drive home, son Jack called and informed me that they had postponed tonight's game.  "Why?", I asked.  "Coach Hatcher is afraid we might mess up his football field.", the newly assigned varsity player opined.  "Rain... he is cancelling a playoff game for rain?", I was amazed, "Football is SUPPOSED to be played in the mud, it's not a friggin' baseball game."  "I know Dad." Jack went on, "you need to call him and fix this."  "There's a limit to my influence, I'm afraid." I explained to a child of mine who is thankfully convinced otherwise, "but this is ridiculous."

Maybe something has changed since I played high school football, but I believe the game is more important than the grass it is played upon.  Or perhaps it was an economic decision... rain certainly affects ticket sales... but I really hope that was not the reason for the postponement.  The guys on the team were honed for competition, the cheerleaders wore their uniforms to school, and the pep rally was scheduled to get everyone properly fired up.  And then they postponed the game.... for..., of all things... RAIN.

The field at Jamieson Stadium is going to be a total wreck tomorrow night anyway.  The Greensboro College Pride plays their last home game on the field tomorrow afternoon.  After all of the rain we have had today and tonight, there is no way that the playing surface will be anything but sloppy for either game, so tonight's postponement only delays the inevitibility of cleats tearing up the manicured turf at Jamieson.

That tends to make me think it was an economic decision.  I hope not.
