From the Amazing but True Department: Grimsley High School's football team won their game against Charlotte Providence to advance to the second round of the 4-A state playoffs. Score: 12-0. For those who don't know, Grimsley has not been exactly known as a football powerhouse in recent memory, but tonight was a turning point for the program. It was Grimsley's first post-season football victory since 1991.
Sophmore son Jackson, who got moved up to varsity from JV just last week, got some good playing time in and performed very well in his offensive tackle position. As I watched him line up against that big ol' defensive line, my mind immediately went back 15 years... to my 7-week-too-soon-preemie who topped the scales at 5 lbs, 3oz. - he'a now nearly 6' and 195lbs and mean as a snake on the field. Pretty cool stuff.
Next week will be a challenge for my preemie and the Whirlies as they face Charlotte Independence High School who is the nation's second ranked team according to USA Today's poll. As I told Jack on the drive home tonight, his team will have an extraordinary opportunity to sneak up and knock off such a high-folutin' program next week.
Do you believe in miracles, Greensboro?
