IN THE BEGINNING ............................................

The tutorial on how to go about a job search will start, somewhat surprisingly, with deciding how to go about the job search instead of writing a resume.  The resume was once the first thing you wrote and then it was mailed to the company or a headhunter.  Some experts believe a resume is no longer needed in the electronic era but I've seen no obituary for the resume yet.   BUT FIRST,  a decision must be made about how one plans to go about looking for a job.

Currently the primary job search methods for someone already in the job market are:

  • NETWORKING
  • TARGETING COMPANIES AND SENDING RESUMES
  • THE WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE METHOD (Based on the book by the same name)
  • SEND YOUR RESUME TO A HEADHUNTER AND HOPE FOR THE BEST.
  • PUT YOUR RESUME ON ONE OF THE BIG JOB BOARDS e.g. MONSTER, HOTJOBS, ETC.
  • SEARCH THE NEWSPAPER JOB LISTINGS IN TARGET CITIES OR THE WALL STREET JOURNAL.
  • SEARCH NICHE BULLETIN BOARDS
  • SEARCH CAREERBUILDER LISTINGS
  • USE PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY CHAT ROOMS AND BULLETIN BOARDS
  • LOOK AT LISTING IN PROFESSIONAL MAGAZINES IN YOUR AREA OF EXPERTISE

Hopefully, it fairly obviously to everyone that no single resume will work for each of these search methods and that is why you should have some idea of how you are going to attack the job search before trying to write that perfect resume.  In several of the following blogs, I will discuss the relative value of each of these job search methods and I will try to apply some statistical analyses.  Just remember 46% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
