NETWORKING The reason the odds are 4 out of 10 that you will find a job through effective networking is that you are dealing with people you already know; church members, fellow professionals, strangers you meet at parties, your children's friend's parents, etc. Just about anyone you already know is potentially part of your job hunting network. I was standing at the front of church one Sunday, talking to the pastor when I overheard John, another member, ask someone where he was working. After the individual stammered for a few seconds, he finally said he was out of work and John asked him what he had done in his previous job. As it turns out John owned a company that was in need of someone with his background. John hired him the following week. Most people, especially men, are reluctant to let people know when they have lost their job and that is a BIG mistake. Like Elizabeth Taylor said in Tennessee William's play Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, "I've always depended on the kindness of strangers". People inherently like to help other people especially when they are not put on the spot by being asked directly for a job. Networking is the best place to start a job search and initially you don't need a formal resume.
Start Networking as soon as you are able to do so without acting desperate but don't wait until you exhaust all Networking possibilities before beginning other job search methods. Desperation instinctively makes us uneasy. When our caveman ancestors were being chased by a bear they were probably pretty desperate and when they came running up to another caveman. The second caveman probably became pretty desperate as soon as he saw the bear also. Especially if the first caveman could run faster.
