Solar storm

I just walked under a tree with yellow leaves so lit up with the sun that it seemed like noontime in July rather than nearing sundown in late October. Space weather forecasters said a solar storm hit the earth today. I think I just walked through it.

Bush blinders (and blunders)
The front cover of the Oct. 13 New Yorker shows a cartoon of George W. Bush riding a white horse across a barren landscape. Bush is wearing the blinders, not the horse, who looks real scared.

I thought of this when I read this article in the NY Times about Bush’s drive-by trip to Asia and Australia, where “rarely did the searing suspicions of America's intentions — and the intentions of Mr. Bush himself — pierce the president's fearsome security bubble.” The article describes Bush as being genuinely surprised after meeting with moderate Islamic leaders in Bali that they think Americans believe all Muslims are terrorists and that the U.S. is so pro-Israel that we're uninterested in a Palestinian state.

But even some of Mr. Bush's aides concede that Mr. Bush has only begun to discover the gap between the picture of a benign superpower that he sees, and the far more calculating, self-interested, anti-Muslim America the world perceives as he speeds by behind dark windows.

Sounds like riding blindly to me.
