Wisdom

I like to read the weekly columns of Dale Dauten, the "Corporate Curmudgeon" in the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News. Today he discusses the difference of giving advice (which is almost always useless) with sharing a bit of wisdom.

He shares the story of an entrepreneur who had an idea of adopting rocks as a material for drawer pulls. Looked cool, but the manufacturing process of drilling holes in the rocks in order to attach the metal fittings was too expensive. The piece of wisdom Dauten shared when asked for advice was simply, "There's got to be a better way." This started a thought process and search by the entrepreneur that led to one good piece of advice from an aeronautical engineer who suggested he use adhesives developed to hold airplanes together instead of the expensive drilling process.

Here's a list of 10 sayings that he has found helpful: 10. Facts are useful; they give the conscious mind something to do while the emotions decide what's true.

9. In every company, people are going to make fun of the boss; it's just that in the good companies, it happens when the boss is around.

8. Every 10th person is a jerk.

7. On the high road, too, there are potholes.

6. The one who dies with the most joys wins.

5. Follow the energy.

4. We are emotional beings pretending to be rational.

3. Think like a hero; work like an artist.

2. Different isn't always better, but better is always different.

1. Experiments never fail.
