Today's announcements from the Emerson Exchange hold great promise for plant operators trying to achieve efficiency, uptime and safety. New vibration monitoring is also integrated into DeltaV and AMS (asset management software). Not only can they detect motors, bearings, and/or shafts going haywire, but they can communicate to the control system and initiate an orderly shutdown of the process if that is required for safe operation. On the wireless side, Emerson is introducing four new wireless products but, most important, a partnership with Cisco to implement plant-wide wireless networking to communicate with (and be approved by) IT systems. More coming--I'm still sitting in the press conference.

I have very little time before I hit the press conferences at the Emerson Global Exchange. Over 2,400 user attendees this year. Huge conference. Emerson CEO, chairman and president David Farr gave the opening keynote--and boy, do I have a better appreciation for the company now. He's the most dynamic CEO focused on winning I've met since Uchida-san of Yokogawa. His message--investing in technology, people and
other assets; driving business value; becoming a global company; oh yes, and winning. There is no mistaking his drive. In a subtle gesture to yours truly and my questions about wireless sensor network usage, John Berra devoted considerable time to explaining seven applications where wireless technology made a substantial business impact on plants.

Much more later.
