I was listening on my "local" NPR station last night to a jazz program where the topic was big band music from the 40s. Remember the war effort (or stories about the war effort) during WWII? There was a concerted campaign to bolster morale and motivation at home while thousands of young men were fighting overseas. Nothing like that for this war that we're in right now. Just a few speeches from Bush and Cheney. Perhaps a mistake or a misunderstanding of leadership roles? Or a misunderstanding of all the tools of the office? This month's Atlantic Monthly has a short article about the expanding powers of the Presidency since Nixon. Maybe power goes to your head and you think you can order people around. I've met people with that attitude. And they wonder why no one likes them.
