Well, the Dow was down a ton, the NASDAQ, too. GM hit a huge low. Rockwell Automation hit a 3-year low. Ford hit a 52-month low. Looks like a slowdown for the manufacturing sector. Prospects in the process area--especially those doing business in oil & gas--seem to be holding on. Guess Rockwell made its oil & gas move a little late. It's still profitable, but well below analysts expectations (hope). It says that North America and Europe are not showing the growth it expected this year. We still have GDP growth in the US, but we're definitely in a slowdown. The economist who writes for Automation World predicts a recession next year. So get your financial house in order, now.

In my political days of the late 60s, I could have been called (actually was called) a "liberal." I sort of still am, but liberalism changed in the 70s and left me label-less. One idea is that of personal responsibility. Aside from certain medical and genetic conditions, I believe that normal human beings should assume responsibility for their actions. Truth, according to Norwegian playwrite Henrik Ibsen, is "a creative response to life." I take that to also mean taking responsibility for doing so. Here's a post from Zen Habits on that topic.

An article in Wired about Chrysler trying to "one-up" the competition and bring WiFi to automobiles. Just what we need, another distraction in the car. But, wait, just what's the range for a WiFi signal? Where is the broadband signal coming from to hit the car?

I just saw a news item in InfoWorld surmising that in the near future you can pitch the laptop and have everything on your smart phone. I just tried it, and it's not working. In fact, I thought I'd get rid of one thing by combining Palm and phone. Now, I carry a pocket notebook with pen. So I still have the third device. I find the small keyboard popular on Blackberries marginal at best for composing short email messages. No way I'm doing a 2,000 word article on it. I like the Palm handwriting recognition, but on the Treo, it often pauses for many seconds at a time (probably while the processor and OS scan for messages and radio signals). I'm thinking of getting a palm (non-phone) for my notes so that I can keep an electronic log just as I used to. I'd love to ditch a device or two, but I'm thinking now that perhaps multi-purpose devices leave a little to be desired.
