Flexible Screen Phones Reality by 2007? I have a tendency to disbelieve any sort of "reality by year X" types of announcements, but this one has be giddy. Philips Polymer Vision scientists have reportedly made "dramatic progress" towards creating cellular phones with flexible screens. The "Polymer Vision PV-QML5" is supposed to be pulled open "like a scroll," leaving users to deal with its 5" screen capable of QVGA (320 x 240) resolutions. Considering how Philips has been working closely with E Ink Corporation for a couple years now towards electronic paper products, I'm roughly 68% willing to believe this article. FOMA Phones To Get PDF Support Japanese mobile giant NTT DoCoMo announced on the 9th that the next generation of FOMA 3G handsets will be getting Adobe Reader LE for viewing PDF files while on the go. I can see where the vectored fonts and graphics of a PDF file would come in handy for mobile phones, particularly for viewing large documents on a small screen. Given some of the other recent announcements we've heard about Japanese mobile phones, PDFs combined with something like RFID tags could make some powerful applications. CeBIT: Siemens Prototype Laser Display Phone This concept was so off the wall that Siemens didn't even have a name for it besides something like "Super Future Laser Communicator" or something. The idea, as you can't tell from the picture, but could tell from the kiosk video, is that a built-in laser display (like the iBiz Virtual Keyboard, sort of, except a dynamic display). The idea is to be able to project an interactive screen anywhere you can set the phone down. If you are on the run, you'd use the white surface on the phone as a screen¡Xbut then you're not any better off than as if you'd built-in a regular screen. Cool, but we won't be seeing this probably ever. In fact, my guess is these sort of concepts will be obsoleted before they get to market by things like tiny, LED-lit DLP/LCD projectors. Also, that's it for the Siemens at the moment. Hopefully all the other cell phone companies' booths will be up and running now. - lev (tips@gizmodo.com) [Gizmodo]9:12:52 AM |
