It seems Microsoft have released Virtual Server 2005. This is great news. I use the tool a lot for trying out beta software and also for studying the various Microsoft server packages and I can state unequivocally that it rules. More information here.

It's been said that we (Edenbrook) are a little too picky with our hiring policy. The reason for that statement is that we are constantly seeking talented, super smart people to join the company but don't actually hire that many, compared to the number that we interview. I disagree though. We aren't picky at all. We just have some high standards and get a lot of people put forward that, for whatever reason, don't meet those standards criteria just yet. When we see people that we think could hit them in the future we'll encourage them to come back and talk to us again at a later date. We've actually hired people that we've done that to because if in the subsequent interview the person has addressed the areas of concern it shows a certain level of commitment both to their own professionalism, as well as to working with us.

So, do you want a job? Do you want to work at a consultancy that genuinely cares about it's staff, that has a lot of fun, that works with some great technology and customers and that is not only one of the top rated consultancies in the UK, but also one of the fastest organically growing companies too? We're actually hiring into the EI practice (my practice), where the focus is on delivering great Integration solutions using either Microsoft of Java based technology. We have customers spanning most industry sectors including automotive, aerospace, finance, insurance and healthcare. We only employ talented experienced people so you can be assured of working with some of the best minds in the country when you join us, but we are not at all snobby about it. We have a lot of fun, and are passionate about what we do. It's a fantastic place to work.

Specifically right now we are looking for Microsoft consultants with the following

   6+ years in IT development/consulting

Degree educated (unless you can really explain convincingly why you don't need a degree)

Minimum of 3 years experience with .NET development (C# is preferred)

Broad experience and knowledge of the entire Microsoft product suite

   Great architectural design skills

Experience with design methods and best practices (including RUP, UML, UP, xP etc, but not necessarily all of them)

   Fantastic communication skills

A passion for technology and its possibilities

   UK Residents and Citizens only

Happy to take a London based role with some travel

We truly are a great bunch of people to work with, we pay well, and we're very focussed on doing the best that we can and raising the bar across the industry. So, if this sounds like a consultancy you'd like to work for then please please get in touch with me, peter.wright, at edenbrook.co.uk (email address written longhand to beat the nasty spam monkeys)

Ever wanted your own pet cow? Course not, they are too big, and noisy and smelly. But, what if they were dog sized! You could teach them to play catch, take them for walks, load them in the back of the car for that family road trip, without worrying about leaving them to get all lonely at home. Yay! Enter the era of the Patio Cow!

After a long and extremely painful wait that involved countless calls to India to find out exactly what the hang up was with the machine, it has finally shipped. Alas, Dell's software integration problem continues though.

I got up this morning to 3 emails telling me that the computer shipped yesterday, the 13th. Woohoo. Strangely they came at different times of the night though, one at 1am, one at 2am and the third at 3am. I wasn't able to connect to Dell's tracking site for a few hours this morning to get shipment tracking info, but when I did get through I found the link to redirect me to Walsh Western's tracking site to find out exactly where my package is. Here's what it says

14/09/04 14:00 HOLYHEAD FERRY ARRIVED AT PORT.
14/09/04 09:30 DUBLIN TRAILER BOARDED FERRY.
14/09/04 08:41 RAHEEN DEPARTED EMF LIMERICK.

So, currently my notebook is in Holyhead in North Wales, and arrived there at 2pm later this afternoon! So, now at long last that explains the mysterious hourly changing estimated delivery date on Dell's website. They have an unstable time machine that whips them backwards and forwards in time, hence the confirmation that my notebook has actually arrived somewhere, despite the fact that it's currently 4 hours before 14:00 on the 14th.

I'd be surprised if this is the first time, but it seems the Offical XBOX UK Magazine's journalistic team has been caught telling lies. Now, I know from experience just how hard it can be reviewing games (it really can be, trust me, especially if the game in question is bad), but that's no excuse for just making stuff up. The issue in question arose out of the magazines review of Headhunter Redemption in the October 2004 edition. THe review pretty much slated the game, and included a few comments such as cut scenes "can't be skipped", and "the odd bike chase succeeds in breaking up the on-foot action.". So, what's the problem here?

Well, on the magazine's online forums, developers Amuze were quick to point out that Yes, you can skip any cut-scene in the game, and Headhunter doesn't have any bike chases in it at all. No comment from the magazine or publisher yet, but presumably someone's due for the chop over this one. You can read the full response from Amuze here.
