Jane Coop Last night Joe and I went to see Jane Coop at the Yukon Arts Centre. It was a wonderful performance. She played Beethoven's Sonata in E flat Major, not one you hear often. The second movement in particular touched me - it was so full of despair. If anyone has been to Hell and back, it must have been Beethoven.
Coop also performed some of Brahmn's last Intermezzos, a Scherzo by Chopin and an Impromptu by Schubert. The Schubert was the only one I didn't care for. Schubert has always been a bit too sugary for my taste.
Remembering On Friday, I went to the Remembrance Day ceremony at our new Canada Games Centre. I don't go every year, and in fact hadn't gone in a while, but this year I felt compelled to attend. I noticed there was a much larger crowd than in past years, so perhaps others too heard the same persistent inner voice that I had. And it wasn't just in Whitehorse...CBC Radio was reporting that an unprecedented number of people attended ceremonies in Ottawa - more than 25,000.
I remember in years past, folks speculating that once all the veterans pass on, Remembrance Day will cease to mean anything to people. I disagree. It was remarkable to see the emotion at that ceremony on Friday. People who obviously have had no direct experience with war were weeping, me among them. I think it's become less about remembering those who fought in particular wars (WW1 and 11, Korea, etc.) and more about the tragic effects of war in general - any where, any time.
