This is a lousy picture of me but you've gotta love the dress.

I had a blast yesterday. My interest in King Louis XIV is piqued (I hadn't realized how much he used dance as a political weapon) as is my curiosity about social life in general during that time. The moment I put on that dress I felt like a different person, but there was something familiar about it at the same time...it was quite eerie.

The woman who owns the dress is a fair bit shorter and rounder than me, so the bodice is hanging loose on me instead of providing that desired 'snug and sexy' look. However you might be interested to know that under the dress there is a basket on each hip. The baskets served a practical purpose - the women could put their sewing or other supplies in them (some even put hot stones in them to warm the body) but the containers also accentuated the hips. Big hips and lovely mounds of bosom were of course highly desirable. I find it fascinating that they didn't think it was a big deal to show their boobs (some wore dresses so low cut that the nipples were exposed) but to show an ankle was scandalous.
