Overweight and The Hormone Connection

Trying to Lose Weight? Sleep More, Get Dog
Stress Linked to More Eating and Smoking

A couple of related news articles this morning: We have been telling Wellness Club members about the hormone connection between stress and obesity for a long time, and Big Science is now chiming in. Big Science is putting the finger on the hormones grehlin and leptin - you can bet that there are pharmaceuticals in the pipeline to deal with these two so-called "fat hormones." We have a slightly different thought - lower your stress levels and improve your sleep patterns and you will lower your cortisol levels as well as improving other hormone levels. Cortisol is a hormone that makes the body store fat in response to stress. Sleep deprivation is chronic in our society, and contributes to this and many other hormonal imbalances. Many of these imbalances cause food and substance (tobacco, alcohol, drug) cravings, which further aggravate the situation. All is not lost however, for proper diet, hormone balancing, sleep normalization, and stress reduction techniques can reverse these imbalances and return a person to good health. Why not check out our website or make an appointment with Dr. Myatt to find out more? Oh, and yes, having a dog can be a wonderful weight loss aid!

I'm off to walk the dogs,
Cheers,
Nurse Mark
